The first part of the Uglies is alright to me. I think I thought I was going to enjoy the book more than I am. It's written well and the story line is good, but I can't get over the names of "littlies" and "pretties" etc. To my the word choices are childish and they really bother me.
ANYWAYS, about the book itself. I love the hope of Tally's character. She is feisty and clearly sad about not being with Peris and being a Pretty yet, but she keeps hope and looks forward. Even though being a Pretty may not be the best thing, it seems like Tally REALLY wants to stay true to who she is, even after becoming a Pretty. The book and Shay almost frustrate me because I want Tally to become a Pretty because it seems as if it is the right thing to do, but I can tell that it isn't and there is more to becoming a pretty than has let on so far.
Until the next post..
I think that Shay is trying to actually get Tally to understand that pretty is not the only thing out in the world and there is something better than being only a cute face. I agree that both of these girls seem to be one tracked minded but together they form a complete view of all the possibilities. If they both try to understand the others view they might be able to help each other somehow.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with your statement "it seems like Tally REALLY wants to stay true to who she is, even after becoming a Pretty." You can maybe argue that Tally's normal self is one that is in a pre-stage before her real life begins, but Tally wants to abandon her original "ugly" self as soon as possible. That is not very true to self to me.
ReplyDeleteI agree with thunderlover14, but I also look at the fact that during the stages of being "ugly" things changes. As people begin to reach the age when they can become pretty, younger "uglies" of the group must adjust to living differently than when their friends were around. When their friends change over they are sometimes loners and lose themselves in the overwhelming dreams of becoming a pretty and being reunited with the people they grew up with. I think that Tally really wants to return to her original self/ true self which she is when she is around Peris. I believe that the person she was when Peris was around is the person she wants to remain and by becoming pretty she will be that person she has always been again.
